The Four-Story Mistake Unit Study - Part Nine

This is a mini-unit for chapter one of Elizabeth Enright's delightful story for children, "The Four-Story Mistake". Read the instructions for using this unit, if you haven't done so already.

Chapter Nine: "The Light in the Woods"

Vocabulary Words:

diminishing
explanation
fatigued
finances
loathsome
ominous
organism
prodigy
refunding
sacrifices
script
temperament

Metaphors and Similies:

"A tree of sound, springing from strong, orderly roots"

"Skimming like a bird over the cold, black mirror"

Correcting Poor Grammar:

Mr. Pepper said, "Oh, t'ain't nuthin', Sonny."  Rewrite using correct grammar!

Science, Math or History Extras:

Math: "Oliver fell on an average of once every 3 minutes."  Let's see -- how many times per hour would Oliver have to fall to "average" once every 3 minutes?  Do you think he really fell that much or was that amount exaggerated?

Find out how to figure averages.  Here is a worksheet with some practice problems and examples that you can print out and do for fun.  Find three things around the house to "average".  How about how often your dog barks?  How often a baby cries or laughs or needs to be changed?  How about figuring out your average amount of sleep per night over a week's time?  Think of more things you can "average".  Have fun!

Questions to Think About:

Before you found out what actually happened to Clarinda Cassidy, what did you think may have happened?  What made you think this?

Suggested Activities:

With your parents' permission, try to make a rope out of old sheets.  Would it be strong enough to climb down from a window?  Would this be a good idea in case of an emergency, or would it take too much time to create?

Rush said the piano at the school could make even Chopsticks sound like Chromatic Fantasy.  Listen to both tunes and see what you think about the piano!  Here is the original Chopsticks Waltz if you would like to listen to it, too -- with some real wooden chopsticks thrown in for fun!
